On the morning of Saturday July 16, hundreds of San Franciscan youth aged 6 to 17 gathered at Kezar Pavilion to compete in Mayor Ed Lee's Inaugural 3-on-3 Youth Hoops Tournament . The tournament, organized by the Mayor’s office of Neighborhood Services and San Francisco Rec and Parks, featured a special appearance by Warriors hype man Franco Finn. This event was preceded by city-wide regional games on June 24 and 25 which brought about 800 youth, boys and girls, to the basketball courts.
Mayor Lee’s tournament encourages friendly competition and team building for youth from all 11 city districts, as well as a city department teams. In the city department division championship game, the San Francisco Fire department team narrowly defeated Rec and Parks.
We caught up with Derick Brown of the Mayor’s office of Neighborhood Services after the event. Derick said, “On behalf of the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services (MONS) and all of the many communities that are greatly impacted by your kind support, I personally thank the Golden State Warriors for the generous contribution of 500 t-shirts. Your donation helps to ensure that MONS is able to continue to strengthen the relationships between the community, local organizations, government agencies, and businesses. Without organizations like you, we would be unable to extend our reach into the neighborhoods and reinforce the bonds between all San Franciscans. We appreciate your support in promoting our rich cultures and diversity throughout the year!”
